CHANDIGARH: The Shiromani Akali Dal(SAD)-led by Sukhbir Singh Badal, on the occasion of Baisakhi, released its first list of seven candidates for the June 1 scheduled Lok Sabha polling for the 13 parliamentary constituencies in Punjab.
Former cabinet minister Dr Daljit Singh Cheema has been fielded from Gurdaspur, former MP Prem Singh Chandumajra from Anandpur Sahib, former MLA NK Sharma from Patiala, former cabinet minister Anil Joshi from Amritsar, former MLA Bikramjit Singh Khalsa from Fatehgarh Sahib, Rajwinder Singh (grandson of former cabinet minister Gurdev Singh Badal) from Faridkot (reserve) constituency, and former MLA Iqbal Singh Jhundan from Sangrur.
As the BJP made it clear on March 26 that it was going to contest all 13 parliamentary seats in the border state alone, it put an end to all the negotiations going on with the SAD about re-stitching the alliance ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. At the same time, the SAD had announced that principles were more important for the 103-year old panthic party as compared to the number game.
Party president Badal, who had won the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Ferozepur, has already announced that he is not going to contest the parliamentary elections this time. Badal’s wife and former Union minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal’s name is surprisingly not there in the first list and she could be fielded this time either from her existing constituency Bathinda or Ferozepur.
